Pan Head Design Advantages for 17-4 PH Screws

Low Profile

The rounded top provides a low-profile head height while maintaining sufficient material for drive recess depth. Ideal for applications with limited clearance.

Flat Bearing Surface

The flat underside of the pan head provides even load distribution across the mating surface, reducing the risk of surface damage.

Drive Versatility

Pan head screws can accommodate slotted, Phillips, Pozidriv, Torx, or combination drives, making them suitable for a wide range of assembly tools.

Aesthetic Appeal

The smooth rounded appearance of pan head screws is preferred in consumer products and visible applications where appearance matters.

Chemical Composition (Weight %) – 17-4 PH Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel

Our 17-4 PH pan head screws are produced from melts that strictly conform to the limits below per ASTM A564 / AMS 5604. The precise addition of copper and niobium enables age-hardening to achieve high strength.

ElementASTM A564 / AMS 5604 (Range %)Typical (analysis)
Carbon (C)≤ 0.070.04
Manganese (Mn)≤ 1.000.60
Phosphorus (P)≤ 0.0400.020
Sulfur (S)≤ 0.0300.010
Silicon (Si)≤ 1.000.50
Chromium (Cr)15.0 – 17.516.2
Nickel (Ni)3.0 – 5.04.2
Copper (Cu)3.0 – 5.03.6
Niobium + Tantalum (Nb+Ta)0.15 – 0.450.28
Iron (Fe)BalanceBalance

Expert note: The Nb/Cu ratio ensures consistent precipitation of coherent copper-rich clusters during aging. This yields tensile strengths up to 190 ksi (1310 MPa) in the H900 condition while retaining good ductility. 17-4 PH is up to 4x stronger than 316 stainless steel. All raw material is positively identified by PMI (Positive Material Identification) and certified with mill test reports.

Additionally, 17-4 PH pan head screws exhibit excellent fracture toughness and very high fatigue strength. Our test certificates include actual values from each production lot. For sour service (NACE MR0175), H1150M or H1150D conditions are recommended for optimal sulfide stress corrosion cracking resistance.

High Temperature Performance of 17-4 PH Pan Head Screws

17-4 PH stainless steel maintains excellent mechanical properties up to 316°C (600°F), making it ideal for high-temperature applications in aerospace, power generation, and automotive systems.

Temperature-Dependent Strength Retention (Condition H900)

TemperatureTensile Strength (MPa)Yield Strength (MPa)Elongation (%)
Room Temperature (20°C)1310117010
100°C (212°F)~1270~1130~11
200°C (392°F)~1220~1080~12
300°C (572°F)~1170~1030~13
316°C (600°F)~1150~1000~13.5
400°C (752°F)~1100~970~14

17-4 PH maintains its mechanical strength up to 600°F (316°C), with good properties retained even at higher temperatures. For continuous service above 400°C, special heat treatments or alternative alloys should be considered. Avoid long-term exposure to temperatures between 370-480°C to prevent loss of toughness at ambient temperature.

Corrosion Resistance of 17-4 PH Pan Head Screws

17-4 PH stainless steel offers excellent corrosion resistance comparable to 304 stainless steel in many environments, attributed to its high chromium content (15-17.5%) which forms a protective Cr₂O₃ passive layer. The corrosion behavior is significantly influenced by heat treatment condition and aging parameters.

Corrosion Performance in Different Environments

EnvironmentCorrosion ResistanceNotes

Chloride environmentsGoodPitting resistance increases when aging from 480°C to 550°C, but decreases at 620°C due to reversed austenite formation.
Marine atmosphereExcellentWidely used in marine fasteners and propeller shafts

Effect of Heat Treatment on Corrosion Resistance

ConditionCorrosion CharacteristicsEnvironment
Aging 480°C (H900)Optimal combination of strength and corrosion resistanceGeneral environments
Aging 495-550°C (H925-H1025)Improved pitting resistance, but increased sensitization riskChloride environments with caution
Aging 620°C (H1150)Maximum stress corrosion cracking resistance, approved per NACE MR0175Sour service applications
Aging >495°CIncreased susceptibility to intergranular corrosion due to chromium carbide precipitationAvoid in corrosive service unless double-aged

Critical Corrosion Considerations for Pan Head Screws

  • Sensitization: Aging above 495°C can cause chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries, leading to chromium depletion and increased susceptibility to intergranular corrosion. However, 17-4 PH is generally less susceptible to sensitization than conventional martensitic grades due to low carbon content.
  • Optimal Aging: Specimens aged at 460°C for 2h or 480°C for 4h demonstrate minimal signs of sensitization and very low degrees of sensitization in DL-EPR tests.
  • NACE MR0175 Compliance: For sour service applications, only H1150M and H1150D double-aged conditions are permitted with maximum hardness of 28 HRC.
  • Comparison to 304: 17-4 PH offers comparable corrosion resistance to 304 stainless steel in many environments, with significantly higher strength (up to 4x stronger than 316).

Corrosion Engineering Note: For critical applications in aggressive environments, RAYCHIN LIMITED can provide passivation, specialized coatings (Xylan, PTFE, silver plating), or recommend optimal heat treatment conditions (H1150, H1150M for maximum stress corrosion cracking resistance). Third-party corrosion testing per ASTM G31, G48, or G61 available upon request. NACE MR0175 compliant pan head screws available in H1150M and H1150D conditions.
