RAYCHIN LIMITED is a recognized expert in 254 SMO bolts — from 254 SMO hex bolts, 254 SMO heavy hex bolts, 254 SMO stud bolts, 254 SMO socket head cap screws, 254 SMO eye bolts to 254 SMO threaded rods. 254 SMO (UNS S31254) is a high-alloy super austenitic stainless steel with 6% molybdenum and nitrogen, developed specifically for use in aggressive chloride-bearing environments such as seawater, offshore platforms, desalination plants, and chemical processing equipment. Our portfolio includes structural bolts, flange bolts, T-bolts, and custom non-standard bolting. Engineered for extreme environments where exceptional corrosion resistance and high strength are critical.
254 SMO hex bolts (finished hex, heavy hex) in UNC, UNF, and metric coarse/fine threads. Diameters from 1/4" to 4" (M6–M100). Lengths up to 4000 mm. Manufactured to ASME B18.2.1, DIN 931/933, and ISO 4014/4017. Full range of 254 SMO heavy hex bolts for flange bolting and structural connections in seawater and chemical processing applications.
254 SMO stud bolts (double-end and continuous thread) with two heavy hex nuts manufactured from matching 254 SMO material. Ideal for heat exchangers, valve bonnets, and pressure vessels in marine and offshore environments. 254 SMO threaded rods supplied in 1m to 4m lengths, fully threaded or with custom end configurations. Rolled threads after solution annealing for optimum grain flow.
Precision 254 SMO socket head cap screws (DIN 912 / ISO 4762) in super austenitic stainless steel. High strength and exceptional corrosion resistance for marine instrumentation, offshore equipment, and chemical processing machinery. Also available in button head, flat head, and socket set screws.
254 SMO eye bolts (shoulder type and plain type) for marine and offshore lifting applications where corrosion resistance is critical. Each bolt proof-tested. Also 254 SMO T-bolts and special anchor bolts for desalination plants and chemical facilities.
254 SMO structural bolts for high-strength steel connections in corrosive environments. Flange bolts with serrated underhead for vibration resistance in offshore applications. All meet dimensional standards of ASTM F3125 when applicable.
Need a special shank diameter, extra-long thread, or unusual head? RAYCHIN engineers work with you to produce custom 254 SMO bolts to your drawing. Expert solution annealing (1150–1200°C followed by water quenching) precisely controlled for each batch. Full NDT (UT, PT, MPI) available.

UNS S31254 1.4547 X1CrNiMoCuN20-18-7 ASTM A479 NACE MR0175
Our 254 SMO bolts are produced from melts that strictly conform to the limits below per ASTM A479 / UNS S31254. The high levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen provide exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, with a Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE) of ≥42.5.
Expert note: The high molybdenum (6%) and nitrogen content gives 254 SMO a PRE value ≥42.5, providing resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in seawater and other chloride environments that is far superior to 316L and 317L stainless steels. This makes 254 SMO bolts ideal for offshore, desalination, and FGD applications.
254 SMO bolts are supplied in the solution annealed condition (1150–1200°C followed by water quenching). The data below represent minimum values per ASTM A479 and EN 10088-3.
254 SMO maintains good mechanical properties at elevated temperatures, though it should not be exposed to temperatures between 600–1000°C for prolonged periods due to the risk of intermetallic phase precipitation. For continuous service, the maximum operating temperature is approximately 400°C.
Note: Intermetallic phases precipitate within the temperature range of 600–1000°C. Therefore, 254 SMO should not be exposed to these temperatures for prolonged periods. For applications requiring strength retention above 400°C, alternative alloys should be considered.
254 SMO was specifically developed for use in aggressive chloride-bearing environments. Its high molybdenum (6%) and nitrogen content provide exceptional resistance to localized corrosion.
The Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE) for 254 SMO is ≥42.5, calculated as PRE = %Cr + 3.3 × %Mo + 16 × %N. This value is significantly higher than 316L (PRE ≈ 24) and 317L (PRE ≈ 29), indicating superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments such as seawater.
Ordinary austenitic steels (304, 316) are prone to chloride stress corrosion cracking at temperatures above 60°C. 254 SMO, with its high nickel and molybdenum content, exhibits excellent resistance to SCC. Accelerated tests show 254 SMO lasting significantly longer than 316L and 904L in chloride SCC environments.
With its very low carbon content (≤0.020%), 254 SMO has minimal risk of carbide precipitation during welding. The steel passes the Strauss test (ASTM A262, practice E) even after sensitizing for one hour at 600–1000°C, demonstrating excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion.
Corrosion Engineering Note: For critical applications in aggressive environments, RAYCHIN LIMITED can provide passivation, specialized coatings (Xylan, PTFE), or recommend optimal heat treatment conditions. Third-party corrosion testing per ASTM G31, G48, or G61 available upon request. NACE MR0175 compliant 254 SMO bolts available for sour service applications.
For high-corrosion applications in seawater and aggressive chemical environments (e.g., heat exchangers, valves, flanges in offshore platforms, desalination plants), RAYCHIN offers 254 SMO stud bolts with heavy hex nuts manufactured from the same material grade. Threads can be rolled after solution annealing for optimum grain flow. 254 SMO threaded rods are supplied in various lengths, with full-length straightening and third-party NDT (PT/UT) upon request. For sour service (NACE MR0175), 254 SMO is fully qualified. All products comply with ASME B1.1 for inch threads or ISO 965 for metric threads.
