254 SMO Fasteners

254 SMO Screws

254 SMO Screws are made of a high-end stainless steel alloy that was developed for resistance to saltwater and chloride corrosion. This 6-Moly (6% Molybdenum) alloy has good localized corrosion resistance and 254 SMO provides much higher strength than other austenitic stainless steels. 254 SMO bolts are an ideal choice for high chloride environments including brackish water, seawater and other applications that demand heavy use of chlorines and chlorides. Compared to sister 6-Moly alloy AL6XN, 254 SMO Screws offer slightly less high temperature stability corrosion resistance and strength.

High Temperature Performance of 254 SMO Screws

254 SMO maintains good mechanical properties at elevated temperatures, though it should not be exposed to temperatures between 600–1000°C for prolonged periods due to the risk of intermetallic phase precipitation. For continuous service, the maximum operating temperature is approximately 400°C. The steel has very good impact strength at both room and cryogenic temperatures, with suggested operating conditions ranging from -196°C to 538°C (-320°F to 1000°F).

Temperature-Dependent Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)

TemperatureYield Strength Rp0.2 (min)

400°C (752°F)160 MPa (23.2 ksi)
500°C (932°F)148 MPa (21.5 ksi)

Note: Intermetallic phases precipitate within the temperature range of 600–1000°C. Therefore, 254 SMO should not be exposed to these temperatures for prolonged periods. For applications requiring strength retention above 400°C, alternative alloys should be considered. The material maintains excellent oxidation resistance up to 500°C.

Corrosion Resistance of 254 SMO Screws

254 SMO was specifically developed for use in aggressive chloride-bearing environments. Its high molybdenum (6%) and nitrogen content provide exceptional resistance to localized corrosion, including pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. The material is frequently used as a cost-effective substitute for nickel-based alloys and titanium in high-chloride environments.

Pitting and Crevice Corrosion Resistance

The Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE) for 254 SMO is ≥42.5, calculated as PRE = %Cr + 3.3 × %Mo + 16 × %N. This value is significantly higher than 316L (PRE ≈ 24) and 317L (PRE ≈ 29), indicating superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments such as seawater. Tests in natural seawater at 60°C (140°F) have shown that 254 SMO can be exposed for prolonged periods without suffering crevice corrosion. In seawater, brackish water, and other chloride-bearing environments, 254 SMO demonstrates outstanding resistance to pitting and crevice attack.

EnvironmentCorrosion ResistanceNotes
Seawater (3.5% NaCl)ExcellentResistant to pitting and crevice corrosion even at elevated temperatures. Suitable for continuous immersion in marine environments. Even in seawater with possible stagnant conditions, 254 SMO performs exceptionally well.
Hydrochloric acidGoodSuperior resistance compared to conventional stainless steels. In general temperature conditions, 254 SMO can be used in diluted hydrochloric acid without risk of localized corrosion.
Sulfuric acid (contaminated)Good to ExcellentMuch more resistant than 316L in naturally aerated sulfuric acid containing chlorides. In pure sulfuric acid, 254 SMO has greater corrosion resistance than 316L, though slightly less than 904L in high concentrations.
Phosphoric acidGoodSuitable for phosphoric acid service in fertilizer production and chemical processing.
Chloride stress corrosion crackingVery GoodHigh nickel and molybdenum content provides excellent resistance to SCC, far superior to 304/316. Accelerated tests show no failure after 1000 hours where 316 fails in less than 150 hours. In boiling 25% NaCl solution (pH=1.5) U-bend tests, 254 SMO showed no failure after 1000 hours.

Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) Resistance

Ordinary austenitic steels (304, 316) are prone to chloride stress corrosion cracking at temperatures above 60°C. 254 SMO, with its high nickel and molybdenum content, exhibits excellent resistance to SCC. The material demonstrates outstanding resistance to corrosion fatigue and stress corrosion cracking in marine and offshore environments. In boiling 25% NaCl solution (pH=1.5) U-bend tests, 254 SMO showed no failure after 1000 hours, while AISI 316 failed in less than 150 hours.

Intergranular Corrosion

With its very low carbon content (≤0.020%), 254 SMO has minimal risk of carbide precipitation during heating. The steel passes the Strauss test (ASTM A262, practice E) even after sensitizing for one hour at 600–1000°C, demonstrating excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion. This makes 254 SMO screws suitable for applications involving welding or elevated temperature exposure during fabrication.

Critical Corrosion Considerations for Screws

  • PRE ≥42.5: The high Pitting Resistance Equivalent ensures outstanding performance in seawater and aggressive chemical environments. With 6% molybdenum content, 254 SMO provides exceptional resistance to chloride-induced pitting.
  • NACE MR0175 Compliance: 254 SMO is qualified for sour service (sulfide stress cracking resistance) in oilfield equipment per NACE MR0175/ISO 15156.
  • Temperature Limitations: Avoid prolonged exposure to 600–1000°C to prevent intermetallic phase precipitation, which can affect corrosion resistance.
  • Galvanic Corrosion: When paired with lower-grade materials, galvanic corrosion should be considered. 254 SMO is cathodic to most other stainless steels. Proper isolation may be required in mixed-material assemblies.
  • Welding: The low carbon content ensures no risk of intergranular corrosion after welding. When welding is required, use ERNiCrMo-3 filler metal.
  • Acid Resistance: In sulfuric acid containing chlorides, 254 SMO offers maximum resistance to localized corrosion. In hydrochloric acid, 254 SMO can be used in diluted concentrations at moderate temperatures.

Corrosion Engineering Note: For critical applications in aggressive environments, RAYCHIN LIMITED can provide passivation, specialized coatings (Xylan, PTFE, silver plating), or recommend optimal heat treatment conditions. Third-party corrosion testing per ASTM G31, G48, or G61 available upon request. NACE MR0175 compliant 254 SMO screws available for sour service applications. In certain applications, 254 SMO has been found to be a more cost-effective substitute for high nickel alloys and titanium alloys in chloride environments.
