RAYCHIN LIMITED is a recognized expert in 254 SMO fasteners — from 254 SMO bolts, 254 SMO nuts, 254 SMO screws, 254 SMO washers to 254 SMO stud bolts and 254 SMO threaded rods. Our portfolio includes heavy hex bolts, hex nuts, socket head cap screws, flat and lock washers, continuous thread rods, double-end studs, and custom non-standard fasteners. 254 SMO (UNS S31254) is a high-alloy super austenitic stainless steel with 6% molybdenum and nitrogen, developed specifically for use in aggressive chloride-bearing environments such as seawater, offshore platforms, desalination plants, and chemical processing equipment. Engineered for extreme environments where exceptional corrosion resistance and high strength are critical.
Hex bolts, heavy hex bolts, structural bolts, flange bolts, socket head cap screws, and precision 254 SMO stud bolts with UNC/UNF or metric threads. Diameters from 1/4" to 4" (M6 – M100). Lengths up to 4000 mm for threaded rods. Manufactured to ASME B18.2.1, DIN 931, DIN 933, and ISO 4014 standards. All 254 SMO stud bolts available with two heavy hex nuts manufactured from matching 254 SMO material.
Hex nuts, heavy hex nuts, jam nuts, slotted/castle nuts, flange nuts, square nuts, coupling nuts, and dome nuts. Precision tapped 254 SMO nuts meet Class 2B / 6H. Proof load tested in accordance with applicable ASTM standards. Our inventory includes 254 SMO coupling nuts for threaded rod connections in seawater and chemical processing applications.
Machine screws (pan, flat, round, truss head), socket set screws, button head cap screws, flat head cap screws, and self-tapping screws. 254 SMO screws are ideal for high-corrosion assemblies requiring both strength and exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. Custom drive types available including Phillips, Torx, and combo drive.
Flat washers (USS, SAE, and oversize), spring lock washers, toothed lock washers, and thrust washers. Our 254 SMO washers are punched or machined from solution-annealed bar/plate, providing uniform corrosion resistance across the entire surface. Precise flatness and chamfers for critical sealing applications.
Continuous thread rods (full thread) in 1m, 2m, 3m lengths or custom cut. 254 SMO threaded rods meet ASTM A479 and ASTM A276 specifications. Used as tie rods, anchor bolts, and HVAC supports in marine environments. Also supplied with rolled threads for improved grain flow and fatigue resistance.
From 254 SMO dowel pins to valve stem extensions and specialized studs for desalination plants, we machine complex geometries. Expert heat treatment (solution annealing at 1150–1200°C followed by water quenching) precisely controlled for each batch. Manufactured to NAS, AN, MS, ANSI, ASTM, ASME, SAE, API, NACE, ISO, DIN, KS standards.

UNS S31254 1.4547 X1CrNiMoCuN20-18-7 ASTM A479 NACE MR0175
Our 254 SMO bolts, nuts, screws, washers, stud bolts and threaded rods are produced from melts that strictly conform to the limits below per ASTM A479 / UNS S31254. The high levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen provide exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, with a Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE) of ≥42.5.
Expert note: The high molybdenum (6%) and nitrogen content gives 254 SMO a PRE value ≥42.5, providing resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in seawater and other chloride environments that is far superior to 316L and 317L stainless steels. This makes 254 SMO fasteners ideal for offshore, desalination, and FGD applications.
254 SMO fasteners are supplied in the solution annealed condition (1150–1200°C followed by water quenching). The data below represent minimum values per ASTM A479 and EN 10088-3.
254 SMO maintains good mechanical properties at elevated temperatures, though it should not be exposed to temperatures between 600–1000°C for prolonged periods due to the risk of intermetallic phase precipitation. For continuous service, the maximum operating temperature is approximately 400°C.
Note: Intermetallic phases precipitate within the temperature range of 600–1000°C. Therefore, 254 SMO should not be exposed to these temperatures for prolonged periods. For applications requiring strength retention above 400°C, alternative alloys should be considered.
254 SMO was specifically developed for use in aggressive chloride-bearing environments. Its high molybdenum (6%) and nitrogen content provide exceptional resistance to localized corrosion.
The Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE) for 254 SMO is ≥42.5, calculated as PRE = %Cr + 3.3 × %Mo + 16 × %N. This value is significantly higher than 316L (PRE ≈ 24) and 317L (PRE ≈ 29), indicating superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments such as seawater.
Ordinary austenitic steels (304, 316) are prone to chloride stress corrosion cracking at temperatures above 60°C. 254 SMO, with its high nickel and molybdenum content, exhibits excellent resistance to SCC. Accelerated tests show 254 SMO lasting significantly longer than 316L and 904L in chloride SCC environments.
With its very low carbon content (≤0.020%), 254 SMO has minimal risk of carbide precipitation during welding. The steel passes the Strauss test (ASTM A262, practice E) even after sensitizing for one hour at 600–1000°C, demonstrating excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion.
Corrosion Engineering Note: For critical applications in aggressive environments, RAYCHIN LIMITED can provide passivation, specialized coatings (Xylan, PTFE), or recommend optimal heat treatment conditions. Third-party corrosion testing per ASTM G31, G48, or G61 available upon request. NACE MR0175 compliant 254 SMO fasteners available for sour service applications.
