RAYCHIN LIMITED is a recognized expert in 254 SMO security screws — from 254 SMO tamper-resistant Torx screws, 254 SMO pin-in-Torx security screws, 254 SMO one-way screws, 254 SMO break-off bolts, 254 SMO spanner head screws to custom non-standard security screw configurations. 254 SMO (UNS S31254) is a high-alloy super austenitic stainless steel with 6% molybdenum and nitrogen, offering nearly twice the strength of 300-series stainless steels and exceptional corrosion resistance in aggressive chloride-bearing environments such as seawater, offshore platforms, desalination plants, and chemical processing equipment. Our portfolio includes security screws manufactured to NAS, AN, MS, ANSI, ASTM, ASME, SAE, API, NACE, ISO, DIN and KS standards. Engineered for extreme environments where tamper resistance, exceptional corrosion resistance, and high strength are critical. 254 SMO security screws are available in all solution annealed conditions with full traceability.
254 SMO tamper-resistant Torx screws featuring a pin in the center of the drive recess that prevents standard Torx bits from engaging. Manufactured to customer specifications with Torx drive sizes T6 through T60. The pin-in-Torx design provides effective tamper resistance while maintaining the torque capabilities of standard Torx drives. Ideal for marine security applications, offshore platform access panels, and pharmaceutical equipment where both tamper resistance and corrosion protection are critical. Available in pan head, button head, and flat head configurations.
254 SMO one-way screws designed for permanent installation where removal is not intended. The unique drive geometry allows installation with standard tools but prevents removal, providing permanent tamper resistance. Available in slotted one-way and Phillips one-way configurations. Ideal for marine infrastructure, public facilities in coastal areas, and chemical plant safety barriers where corrosion resistance and vandalism prevention are required.
254 SMO break-off bolts featuring a breakaway head that shears off at a predetermined torque, leaving a permanent, tamper-proof installation. The remaining stub has no drive features, making removal extremely difficult. Ideal for high-security applications in offshore platforms, desalination plants, and chemical processing facilities where permanent fastening and corrosion resistance are essential.
254 SMO spanner head screws with two holes in the head requiring a special spanner bit for installation and removal. Available in pan head, button head, and flat head configurations. The spanner drive provides moderate tamper resistance while allowing service access when needed. Ideal for marine equipment access panels, offshore instrumentation, and pharmaceutical processing equipment in corrosive environments.
254 SMO Tri-Wing and Torq-Set security screws featuring specialized drive recesses that require matching security bits. These drive types provide excellent tamper resistance and torque transmission. Available in various head styles. Ideal for aerospace, defense, and marine applications where both security and corrosion resistance are required.
Need a custom drive pattern, unique head configuration, or special tamper-resistant feature? RAYCHIN engineers work with you to produce custom 254 SMO security screws to your drawing. Options include custom pin positions, proprietary drive patterns, and combination drives. Expert solution annealing (1150–1200°C followed by water quenching) precisely controlled for each batch. Manufactured to NAS, AN, MS, ANSI, ASTM, ASME, SAE, API, NACE, ISO, DIN, KS standards.
Standard Torx drive with center pin prevents unauthorized removal. Highest torque capacity among security drives.
Allows installation only, cannot be removed. Ideal for permanent, tamper-proof installations.
Head shears off at preset torque, leaving no drive features. Maximum security for permanent installations.
Two-hole drive requiring special spanner bit. Moderate security with service access.
Specialized drives for aerospace and defense applications. Excellent torque transmission.

UNS S31254 1.4547 X1CrNiMoCuN20-18-7 F44 ASTM A479 NACE MR0175
Our 254 SMO security screws are produced from melts that strictly conform to the limits below per ASTM A479 / UNS S31254. The high levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen provide exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, with a Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE) of ≥42.5. The PRE is calculated as %Cr + 3.3 × %Mo + 16 × %N.
Expert note: The high molybdenum (6%) and nitrogen content gives 254 SMO a PRE value ≥42.5, providing resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in seawater and other chloride environments that is far superior to 316L (PRE≈24) and 317L (PRE≈29). This makes 254 SMO security screws ideal for marine, offshore, and chemical applications where both tamper resistance and corrosion resistance are required. The material offers nearly twice the strength of 300-series stainless steels.
254 SMO security screws are supplied in the solution annealed condition (1150–1200°C followed by water quenching). The data below represent minimum values per ASTM A479 and EN 10088-3.
254 SMO maintains good mechanical properties at elevated temperatures, with a suggested operating range from -196°C to 538°C (-320°F to 1000°F). It should not be exposed to temperatures between 600–1000°C for prolonged periods due to the risk of intermetallic phase precipitation. For continuous service, the maximum operating temperature is approximately 400°C.
Note: Intermetallic phases precipitate within the temperature range of 600–1000°C. Therefore, 254 SMO should not be exposed to these temperatures for prolonged periods. The material maintains excellent oxidation resistance up to 500°C and retains good impact strength at cryogenic temperatures down to -196°C. The steel passes the Strauss test (ASTM A262, practice E) even after sensitizing for one hour at 600–1000°C.
254 SMO was specifically developed for use in aggressive chloride-bearing environments. Its high molybdenum (6%) and nitrogen content provide exceptional resistance to localized corrosion, including pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking. The material is frequently used as a cost-effective substitute for nickel-based alloys and titanium in high-chloride environments. The high nickel and molybdenum content provides excellent resistance to SCC, far superior to 304/316.
The Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE) for 254 SMO is ≥42.5. This value is significantly higher than 316L (PRE≈24) and 317L (PRE≈29), indicating superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments such as seawater. Even at elevated temperatures, 254 SMO demonstrates exceptional resistance to crevice corrosion in seawater. Tests in natural seawater at 60°C (140°F) have shown that 254 SMO can be exposed for prolonged periods without suffering crevice corrosion.
Ordinary austenitic steels (304, 316) are prone to chloride stress corrosion cracking at temperatures above 60°C. 254 SMO, with its high nickel and molybdenum content, exhibits excellent resistance to SCC. In boiling 25% NaCl solution U-bend tests, 254 SMO shows no failure after 1000 hours, while 316 fails in less than 150 hours. The material is approved per NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for sour service applications. For sour service, 254 SMO is qualified for use in environments containing H₂S with appropriate limitations on chloride concentration and temperature.
With its very low carbon content (≤0.020%), 254 SMO has minimal risk of carbide precipitation during heating. The steel passes the Strauss test (ASTM A262, practice E) even after sensitizing for one hour at 600–1000°C, demonstrating excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion. This makes 254 SMO security screws suitable for applications involving welding or elevated temperature exposure during fabrication.
