RAYCHIN LIMITED is a recognized expert in 254 SMO nuts — from 254 SMO hex nuts, 254 SMO heavy hex nuts, 254 SMO jam nuts, 254 SMO slotted nuts, 254 SMO flange nuts, 254 SMO serrated flange nuts, 254 SMO coupling nuts to custom non-standard nut configurations. 254 SMO (UNS S31254) is a high-alloy super austenitic stainless steel with 6% molybdenum and nitrogen, developed specifically for use in aggressive chloride-bearing environments such as seawater, offshore platforms, desalination plants, and chemical processing equipment. Our portfolio includes nuts manufactured to NAS, AN, MS, ANSI, ASTM, ASME, SAE, API, NACE, ISO, DIN and KS standards. Engineered for extreme environments where exceptional corrosion resistance and high strength are critical. 254 SMO nuts are proof load tested and available in all sizes from M3 to M100 and 1/4" to 4".
254 SMO hex nuts (finished hex, heavy hex) in UNC, UNF, and metric coarse/fine threads. Diameters from M3 to M100 (1/4" to 4"). Manufactured to ASME B18.2.2, DIN 934, ISO 4032, and JIS B1181. Full range of 254 SMO heavy hex nuts for flange bolting and structural connections in seawater and chemical processing applications. Proof load tested per applicable ASTM standards. Available in plain, passivated, or coated finishes.
254 SMO jam nuts (thin hex) for locking applications where space is limited. 254 SMO slotted nuts and castle nuts for use with cotter pins in marine and offshore applications. Available in NAS, AN, and MS series configurations. Ideal for applications requiring positive locking in high-vibration environments.
254 SMO flange nuts with serrated or non-serrated flange for vibration-resistant assemblies. The serrated flange design enhances grip and prevents loosening due to vibration, making them ideal for critical applications in offshore platforms and desalination plants. 254 SMO serrated flange nuts provide excellent locking performance without the need for additional washers.
254 SMO coupling nuts for threaded rod connections and extended thread engagement. Custom lengths available from 10mm to 200mm. Ideal for tie rod assemblies, HVAC supports, and marine applications where long engagement is required. Manufactured to ASTM A479 specifications with full traceability.
254 SMO square nuts for use in channels and confined spaces. 254 SMO dome nuts (acorn nuts) for decorative and protective applications where thread coverage is required and corrosion resistance is critical. Available in multiple drive styles and finishes.
Need a special thread size, unusual configuration, or non-standard drive? RAYCHIN engineers work with you to produce custom 254 SMO nuts to your drawing. Expert solution annealing (1150–1200°C followed by water quenching) precisely controlled for each batch. Manufactured to NAS, AN, MS, ANSI, ASTM, ASME, SAE, API, NACE, ISO, DIN, KS standards. Custom surface finishes including passivation, PTFE coating, and silver plating available.

UNS S31254 1.4547 X1CrNiMoCuN20-18-7 ASTM A479 NACE MR0175
Our 254 SMO nuts are produced from melts that strictly conform to the limits below per ASTM A479 / UNS S31254. The high levels of chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen provide exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, with a Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE) of ≥42.5. The PRE is calculated as %Cr + 3.3 × %Mo + 16 × %N.
Expert note: The high molybdenum (6%) and nitrogen content gives 254 SMO a PRE value ≥42.5, providing resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in seawater and other chloride environments that is far superior to 316L (PRE≈24) and 317L (PRE≈29). This makes 254 SMO nuts ideal for offshore, desalination, and FGD applications.
254 SMO nuts are supplied in the solution annealed condition (1150–1200°C followed by water quenching). The data below represent minimum values per ASTM A479 and EN 10088-3. Nuts are proof load tested to ensure compatibility with mating bolts.
254 SMO maintains good mechanical properties at elevated temperatures, though it should not be exposed to temperatures between 600–1000°C for prolonged periods due to the risk of intermetallic phase precipitation. For continuous service, the maximum operating temperature is approximately 400°C. The steel has very good impact strength at both room and cryogenic temperatures.
Note: Intermetallic phases precipitate within the temperature range of 600–1000°C. Therefore, 254 SMO should not be exposed to these temperatures for prolonged periods. For applications requiring strength retention above 400°C, alternative alloys should be considered.
254 SMO was specifically developed for use in aggressive chloride-bearing environments. Its high molybdenum (6%) and nitrogen content provide exceptional resistance to localized corrosion, including pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking.
The Pitting Resistance Equivalent (PRE) for 254 SMO is ≥42.5, calculated as PRE = %Cr + 3.3 × %Mo + 16 × %N. This value is significantly higher than 316L (PRE ≈ 24) and 317L (PRE ≈ 29), indicating superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments such as seawater. Tests in natural seawater at 60°C (140°F) have shown that 254 SMO can be exposed for prolonged periods without suffering crevice corrosion.
Ordinary austenitic steels (304, 316) are prone to chloride stress corrosion cracking at temperatures above 60°C. 254 SMO, with its high nickel and molybdenum content, exhibits excellent resistance to SCC. In boiling 25% NaCl solution (pH=1.5) U-bend tests, 254 SMO showed no failure after 1000 hours, while AISI 316 failed in less than 150 hours.
With its very low carbon content (≤0.020%), 254 SMO has minimal risk of carbide precipitation during heating. The steel passes the Strauss test (ASTM A262, practice E) even after sensitizing for one hour at 600–1000°C, demonstrating excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion.
Corrosion Engineering Note: For critical applications in aggressive environments, RAYCHIN LIMITED can provide passivation, specialized coatings (Xylan, PTFE, silver plating), or recommend optimal heat treatment conditions. Third-party corrosion testing per ASTM G31, G48, or G61 available upon request. NACE MR0175 compliant 254 SMO nuts available for sour service applications.
