RAYCHIN LIMITED is a leading manufacturer of Monel Set Screws – precision headless fasteners engineered from nickel-copper alloys, delivering exceptional corrosion resistance, high strength, and reliable performance in the most demanding marine, chemical, and industrial environments. Set screws (also known as grub screws) are fully threaded with a hex socket drive and various point styles to secure rotating components such as gears, pulleys, and collars onto shafts. Monel alloys, among the first nickel-based alloys commercialized, maintain a single solid-solution phase (or precipitation-hardened structure in K-500) that resists attack from a range of corrosive media that would damage both carbon steel and stainless steel. Our portfolio includes all standard and custom configurations manufactured to NAS, AN, MS, ANSI, ASTM, ASME, SAE, API, NACE, ISO, DIN and KS standards, including ASME B18.3 (inch series), ISO 4026-4029 (metric series), and DIN 913-916. Whether you require Monel 400 set screws for marine shaft collars, Monel K-500 set screws for oil & gas downhole tools, or custom nickel-copper fasteners for chemical processing, RAYCHIN delivers precision, quality, and full traceability. All mechanical properties are presented in MPa and ksi (kilopound per square inch).
Monel cup point set screws feature a cup-shaped indentation on one end. This is the most commonly used point style, designed for quick, semi-permanent or permanent applications where the sharp edge of the cup point can bite into the mating surface to provide maximum resistance to loosening. Ideal for general shaft and gear retention in marine and chemical environments where corrosion resistance is critical.
Monel cone point set screws have a sharp, conical point that delivers the strongest clamping force due to deep penetration into the mating shaft. They are typically used for permanent assembly applications where maximum holding power is required and shaft deformation is acceptable. Excellent for heavy-duty marine shafting and downhole tool retention.
Monel flat point set screws have a flat, smooth bearing surface. This economical style is used when components need to be frequently adjusted or repositioned, as they minimize shaft deformation and allow for repeated removal and reinstallation without damaging the mating surface. Ideal for instrument adjustments in chemical processing plants.
Monel dog point set screws feature a cylindrical projection (dog) that extends beyond the thread. The dog fits into a mating hole in the shaft, providing positive axial location and preventing movement under high shear loads. Available in extended and half-dog point configurations. Used extensively in marine propeller shaft couplings and offshore rigging.
Monel set screws are available with various drive types including hex socket (Allen), slotted, and tamper-resistant security drives. Hex socket is the most common for high-torque applications. Precision-formed sockets ensure consistent engagement and minimize cam-out during installation in corrosive environments. Custom drives available upon request.
Need a special point geometry, non-standard length, proprietary drive, or unique thread form? RAYCHIN engineers design and produce custom Monel set screws to your exact specifications – any condition (annealed, cold worked, age-hardened for K-500), with full material traceability. Prototype to production volumes supported. In-house metallurgical laboratory and failure analysis capabilities ensure optimal performance for your application.
Monel set screws are extensively used in marine environments due to their outstanding resistance to seawater corrosion. Applications include shaft collars, propeller couplings, gear retention on drive shafts, rigging components, and underwater instrumentation on boats, ships, and submarines. Unlike stainless steel, Monel maintains structural integrity even in submerged or splash-zone conditions, with corrosion rates below 0.025 mm/year in seawater. The flush-mount design of set screws allows for smooth profiles with no protruding heads.
Monel set screws in chemical processing plants resist aggressive substances such as sulfuric acid (concentrations above 80%), hydrochloric acid (low concentrations), caustic solutions, and reducing atmospheres. Used in the assembly of instrument housings, control panels, valve actuators, pump components, and reactor internals. By preventing chemical erosion and galvanic reactions, Monel ensures system integrity, reduces maintenance frequency, and enhances operational safety in corrosive processing environments.
Monel set screws qualified per NACE MR0175 for offshore drilling rigs, subsea production systems, wellhead equipment, and instrument packages. These environments combine high pressure, elevated temperatures, and exposure to corrosive elements like hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), chlorides, and seawater. Monel's resistance to stress corrosion cracking and sulfide stress cracking ensures reliable performance in deepwater and sour gas applications. Monel K-500, with precipitation hardening, provides yield strengths above 690 MPa (100 ksi) for high-strength downhole instrument fasteners.
Monel set screws are used in both aircraft and spacecraft components that must perform in extreme environments – ranging from high-temperature engine zones to the vacuum of outer space. Found in fuel systems, hydraulic lines, instrument panels, avionics enclosures, and landing gear assemblies. Monel retains its strength across a broad temperature range (-423°F to 1000°F), resists oxidation, and performs reliably under thermal cycling. Non-magnetic properties essential for sensitive instrumentation.
Monel set screws in nuclear reactor instrument panels, steam turbine controls, and power plant seawater cooling systems provide reliable fastening in corrosive and high-temperature environments. Excellent resistance to high-temperature steam, with corrosion rates less than 0.026 mm/year at elevated temperatures. Maintains mechanical properties up to 540°C (1000°F) in oxidizing and reducing conditions. Used for retaining balance weights, sensor mounts, and control linkages.
Monel set screws in seawater intake systems, desalination plants, and offshore platform instrument enclosures resist pitting and crevice corrosion in high-velocity seawater. Used for control panel fasteners, valve actuators, and pump components where long-term reliability in saltwater is essential. Virtually immune to stress corrosion cracking in marine environments. The compact design of set screws allows for secure fastening in confined spaces.
RAYCHIN LIMITED manufactures Monel set screws from vacuum induction melted (VIM) material conforming to the most widely used national and international specifications. All material is traceable to the mill.
Our Monel set screws are produced from vacuum induction melted (VIM) material conforming to the following limits per ASTM, AMS, and industry standards.
Metallurgical note: Monel 400 is a solid-solution nickel-copper alloy that is hardened only through cold working. It remains ductile even at subzero temperatures and does not require heat treatment for high strength properties. Monel K-500 adds aluminum and titanium to enable precipitation hardening (aging), achieving yield strengths above 690 MPa (100 ksi) while maintaining excellent corrosion resistance. Both alloys are essentially non-magnetic (K-500 is non-magnetic; Monel 400 is slightly magnetic at room temperature but loses magnetism at elevated temperatures). The high nickel content provides exceptional resistance to stress corrosion cracking, while copper enhances resistance to reducing environments such as hydrofluoric and sulfuric acids. Monel set screws are headless and fully threaded, with a hex socket drive for secure installation in confined spaces.
Monel set screws are supplied in various conditions per ASTM and AMS specifications. Data represent typical values based on industry standards. ksi values (kilopound per square inch) are provided alongside MPa.
Monel alloys retain useful mechanical properties at elevated temperatures up to 540°C (1000°F) and can operate in moderately elevated environments. The alloys maintain excellent ductility and toughness from cryogenic temperatures up to 500°F (260°C) continuously, with good oxidation resistance up to 1000°F. Monel K-500 is typically limited to 480°C (900°F) to prevent over-aging of the precipitation-hardened structure.
Note: Monel excels in applications requiring maximum corrosion resistance at moderate to high temperatures, particularly in reducing environments where stainless steels may fail. Above 480°C, Monel K-500 may experience over-aging and loss of strength.
Monel alloys offer outstanding corrosion resistance across a wide range of aggressive environments, making them suitable for the most demanding applications including marine, chemical processing, oil & gas, and power generation.
All Monel set screws are manufactured and tested to meet the following standards:
