Metallurgical note: Titanium alloys are lightweight metals with density approximately 4.43-4.51 g/cm³ – about 45% lighter than steel while offering comparable or superior strength . Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is an alpha-beta alloy strengthened through a combination of aluminum (alpha stabilizer) and vanadium (beta stabilizer), providing excellent strength, fatigue resistance, and corrosion resistance . Grade 2 is commercially pure titanium with exceptional corrosion resistance and formability, ideal for marine and chemical applications . Grade 7 contains palladium additions (0.12-0.25%) that significantly enhance corrosion resistance in reducing acids and crevice conditions . All titanium alloys exhibit exceptional corrosion resistance due to the formation of a stable, self-healing oxide layer (TiO₂) that provides protection in seawater, acids, and oxidizing environments . Titanium is completely non-magnetic and exhibits minimal gas discharge, making it ideal for semiconductor and medical imaging applications . When installing titanium set screws, use anti-seize compound to prevent galling – a common issue with titanium due to its tendency to cold-weld under high pressure .

Exceptional Corrosion Resistance of Titanium Set Screws

Titanium alloys are renowned for their outstanding corrosion resistance, often outperforming stainless steel in aggressive environments . The material forms a stable, adherent, and self-healing oxide layer (TiO₂) that provides protection against a wide range of corrosive media . In salt spray testing (10% NaCl), titanium exhibits corrosion rates less than 0.01 mm/year, compared to 0.1 mm/year for 304 stainless steel . Titanium is virtually immune to seawater corrosion, making it ideal for marine and offshore applications .

Note: At higher temperatures (>80°C) and in crevice conditions with chlorides, Grade 7 titanium with palladium addition is recommended to prevent crevice corrosion .

  • Corrosion Resistance: Titanium offers exceptional resistance to seawater, salt spray, chlorides, nitric acid, and oxidizing environments . In salt spray testing, titanium corrodes at rates <0.01 mm/year – significantly outperforming stainless steel .
  • Pitting & Crevice Corrosion: Titanium is virtually immune to pitting corrosion in chloride environments, but at temperatures >80°C in crevice conditions, palladium-stabilized grades (Grade 7, Grade 16) are recommended .
  • Chlorine Resistance: Titanium is immune to wet chlorine attack up to 350°C, making it ideal for chlorine-based process equipment . Dry chlorine gas, however, causes rapid attack and ignition risk .
  • Biocompatibility: Titanium is fully biocompatible, non-toxic, and does not elicit adverse tissue reactions, making it ideal for medical implants and surgical instruments .
  • Galvanic Corrosion: Titanium is more noble than aluminum and steel but may experience galvanic corrosion when coupled with dissimilar metals. Appropriate isolation or coating may be required.
  • High-Temperature Protection: At temperatures above 900°C, protective coatings such as TiAlN are required to prevent rapid oxidation and alpha-case formation .
