Tungsten Fasteners

Tungsten Set Screws

Tungsten Set Screws are known for their extreme high density; because of this unique attribute, they are often used for balancing rotating parts. Tungsten’s high mass also makes these fasteners radiopaque. This allows Tungsten Set Screws to block radiation and show up well on x-rays – even better than lead. Another unique attribute of tungsten is its extrmely high melting point of 3420°C. The high temperature stability of Tungsten Set Screws make them ideal for some of the hottest vacuum furnace environments. Beyond their high mass and temperature stability, tungsten fasteners are also very corrosion resistant.
Tungsten Set Screws are usually made from tungsten alloys per ASTM B777, and range from 90% to 97% pure tungsten, alloyed with nickel and copper or nickel and iron. Fasteners can also be made from Commercially Pure (CP) Tungsten.

Tungsten Set Screws – Comprehensive Product Range

Hexagon Socket Drive

Tungsten set screws feature precision hexagon socket drives per ASME B18.3 (inch series) and ISO 4026-4029 / DIN 913-916 (metric series). The internal hex drive allows for high tightening torques and secure installation in confined spaces where external wrenching is impractical. Available in diameters from M3 to M24 (#0 to 1"). Drive sockets are precision machined to ensure proper tool engagement and torque transmission.

Cup Point Set Screws (ISO 4029 / DIN 916)

Tungsten cup point set screws feature a cup-shaped indentation on one end that provides the strongest clamping force. This is the most commonly used type for semi-permanent or permanent applications where it is acceptable to cut the cup point edge into the mating surface. Ideal for high-temperature rotating assemblies and vibration-prone environments where positive locking is essential.

Cone Point Set Screws (ISO 4027 / DIN 914)

Tungsten cone point set screws feature a sharp cone-shaped point that delivers the strongest clamping force due to deep penetration. They are typically used for permanent assemblies where maximum holding power is required. The high density of tungsten ensures exceptional inertial balance in rotating components.

Flat Point Set Screws (ISO 4026 / DIN 913)

Tungsten flat point set screws feature a flat surface on the bottom of the screw, making them ideal for applications requiring frequent adjustment or where minimal shaft deformation is desired. The flat point distributes clamping force evenly without marring the mating surface.

Pure Tungsten & Heavy Alloy Grades

Pure tungsten set screws (99.95% W) offer maximum density (19.3 g/cm³) and the highest melting point (3422°C) for extreme applications. Tungsten heavy alloy set screws (Class 1-4, 90-97% W) provide enhanced machinability and ductility while maintaining high density (16.85-18.85 g/cm³). W-NiFe alloys are magnetic with higher strength; W-NiCu alloys are non-magnetic for specialized applications.

Custom & Non-Standard Set Screws

Need special point configurations, proprietary drives, non‑standard lengths, or unique thread forms? RAYCHIN engineers design and produce custom tungsten set screws to your exact specifications – any grade (Pure W, Class 1-4 heavy alloys) – with full material traceability. Available with ground finishes and custom tolerances. Prototype to production volumes supported. Cleanroom packaging available for nuclear and medical applications.

Metallurgical note: Tungsten is a refractory metal with the highest melting point of all metals (3422°C). Pure tungsten exhibits a body-centered cubic crystal structure and exceptional high-temperature strength, but is brittle at room temperature and difficult to machine. Tungsten heavy alloys are produced by liquid phase sintering of tungsten powder with nickel-iron or nickel-copper binders, creating a composite microstructure of tungsten grains embedded in a ductile matrix. This structure provides improved machinability and ductility while maintaining high density. The nickel-iron binder system offers higher strength and is magnetic, while nickel-copper binder provides non-magnetic properties – essential for certain medical and electronic applications. Higher tungsten content (Class 4 > Class 1) increases density but reduces ductility and machinability. All tungsten alloys are susceptible to oxidation above 500°C and require protective atmospheres or coatings for high-temperature service in air. Tungsten's radiopacity exceeds that of lead, making it ideal for radiation shielding applications.

High‑Temperature Performance of Tungsten Set Screws

Tungsten is the refractory metal with the highest melting point (3422°C) and exceptional high-temperature strength and stability in vacuum or inert atmospheres. Pure tungsten maintains useful mechanical properties up to 2800°C (5072°F) in non-oxidizing environments, making it suitable for extreme temperature applications in rocket engines, plasma-facing components, and high-temperature furnaces. Tungsten heavy alloys have lower maximum service temperatures (typically 800-1000°C) due to the presence of lower-melting binder phases (Ni-Fe, Ni-Cu) which begin to soften and weaken at elevated temperatures.

Note: Tungsten begins to oxidize rapidly above 500°C in air. All high-temperature applications require vacuum, inert atmosphere, or protective coatings.

Corrosion Resistance of Tungsten Set Screws

Tungsten has unique corrosion characteristics that vary significantly between pure tungsten and tungsten heavy alloys.

Oxidation Behavior

Tungsten begins to oxidize rapidly at temperatures above 500°C in air, forming volatile tungsten trioxide (WO₃). This leads to rapid material loss and catastrophic failure. Therefore, tungsten set screws are not suitable for high-temperature applications in air without protective coatings (such as MoSi₂, SiC, or Ir). In vacuum or inert gas atmospheres (argon, helium, hydrogen), tungsten maintains its strength and integrity to very high temperatures.

Chemical Resistance

MediumTemperatureCorrosion Rate
Mineral Acids (HCl, H₂SO₄, HNO₃)Room temperatureSlow attack, dissolves in HF+HNO₃ mixture
Alkalis (NaOH, KOH)Room temperatureResistant
Molten Metals (Li, Na, K, Mg, Zn, Ag)High temperatureResistant to attack, low solubility
WaterAll temperaturesResistant
HydrogenUp to 3000°CCompatible, no reaction
NitrogenAbove 1500°CForms nitrides, embrittlement
  • Oxidation Resistance: Poor above 500°C in air – requires protective atmosphere or coating for high-temperature service.
  • Acid Resistance: Tungsten is slowly attacked by most mineral acids at room temperature, and rapidly dissolved by a mixture of hydrofluoric and nitric acids. Tungsten heavy alloys may suffer galvanic corrosion between tungsten grains and the binder phase in aqueous electrolytes – not recommended for wet chemical environments without protective measures.
  • Alkali Resistance: Good resistance to alkalis at room temperature.
  • Liquid Metal Compatibility: Excellent resistance to attack by many molten metals (Li, Na, K, Mg, Zn, Ag) – valuable for nuclear and metallurgical applications.
  • Hydrogen Compatibility: Fully compatible with hydrogen up to very high temperatures – used in hydrogen furnace applications.
  • Radiopacity: Tungsten's high density makes it highly radiopaque – even better than lead. Tungsten set screws block radiation effectively and show up clearly on X-rays, making them ideal for medical imaging markers and radiation shielding applications.
  • Non-Toxicity: Tungsten is non-toxic and non-radioactive (in its natural isotopic composition), making it safe for medical and food processing applications.
