Note: High-temperature properties are for short-term exposure. For long-term service, titanium alloys are typically limited to 300-400°C due to oxidation and microstructural stability.

High‑Temperature Performance of Titanium Hex Nuts

Titanium alloys maintain useful mechanical properties at elevated temperatures, though their application is limited by oxidation resistance and microstructural stability. Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) retains significant strength up to 400-500°C for short-term exposure, making it suitable for aerospace and automotive components subject to moderate heat. At 400°C, Ti-6Al-4V maintains approximately 75% of its room temperature tensile strength. However, prolonged exposure above 300-400°C can lead to oxidation and formation of an oxygen-enriched brittle alpha-case layer that degrades fatigue resistance and ductility. For applications requiring sustained high-temperature performance in oxidizing environments, titanium alloys may require protective coatings such as TiAlN to enhance oxidation resistance. Grade 2 commercially pure titanium has lower high-temperature strength and is typically limited to applications below 300°C. Grade 12 titanium offers enhanced high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance for industrial applications up to 300°C.
