Alloy 330 Studs are specifically designed for high temperature furnace applications such as vacuum furnaces, heat treating and brazing applications. The most prized trait of alloy 330 is its ability perform under cyclic conditions of temperature extremes from heating and cooling; as well as in alternate carburizing and oxidizing atmospheres. An austenitic, nickel-chromium-iron-silicon alloy, Alloy 330 Studs also offer industry a low coefficient of expansion, excellent ductility, and high strength.

Expert note: The silicon addition (1.0-1.5%) significantly enhances oxidation resistance and spallation resistance during thermal cycling. The high nickel content (34-37%) provides exceptional resistance to carburization and thermal fatigue, making Alloy 330 ideal for studs in cyclic heating/cooling furnace environments. The alloy remains fully austenitic at all temperatures and is not subject to sigma phase embrittlement.

Corrosion Resistance of Alloy 330 Studs
Alloy 330 offers excellent corrosion resistance in both high-temperature and aqueous environments:
Oxidation & scaling: Exceptional resistance in air, combustion gases, and sulfur‑bearing atmospheres up to 1150°C. The silicon addition enhances oxide adhesion and spallation resistance.
Carburization: High nickel content (34-37%) provides excellent resistance to carbon absorption in carbon-rich atmospheres, making it ideal for furnace components and heat treating equipment.
Nitriding: Good resistance to nitrogen-rich atmospheres (cracked ammonia, nitriding furnaces) due to stable austenitic structure.
Stress corrosion cracking: High nickel content provides immunity to chloride SCC in most environments, superior to 304 and 316 stainless steels.
Thermal shock: Excellent resistance to thermal shock, designed to withstand repeated quenching cycles without cracking or degradation.
Aqueous corrosion: Similar to 310 stainless; suitable for organic acids, nitric acid, and many oxidizing environments. Not intended for strong reducing acids or chloride pitting environments.
Sigma phase resistance: Fully austenitic at all temperatures, resists sigma phase embrittlement even after prolonged high-temperature exposure.
Corrosion Engineering Note: Alloy 330 is optimized for high-temperature oxidizing, carburizing, and nitriding atmospheres. Its high nickel content provides exceptional resistance to thermal fatigue and thermal shock. For applications requiring resistance to seawater or strong chlorides, we recommend 254 SMO or 6% Mo grades. Third-party corrosion testing per ASTM standards available upon request.
