Lock washers work by preventing the bolt from rotating. There are many different types of lock washers, including:


  • Split washers

Also known as helical lock washers, these washers have two uneven ends that bite into the fastener to keep it from turning.


  • Internal-tooth washers

These washers have teeth on the inside of the ring that make contact with the fastener near the head.


  • External-tooth washers

These washers have teeth on the outside of the ring and are better suited for fasteners with large heads.


  • Retaining washers

These washers have internal teeth that grip the screw shank.


  • Sealing washers

Also known as tap washers, these washers create a seal between the screw head and the surface it's fastened to.


The effectiveness of a lock washer depends on its size and fit. The inside diameter of the lock washer should closely match the diameter of the bolt.
