Lock washers work by preventing the bolt from rotating. There are many different types of lock washers, including:
Split washers
Also known as helical lock washers, these washers have two uneven ends that bite into the fastener to keep it from turning.
Internal-tooth washers
These washers have teeth on the inside of the ring that make contact with the fastener near the head.
External-tooth washers
These washers have teeth on the outside of the ring and are better suited for fasteners with large heads.
Retaining washers
These washers have internal teeth that grip the screw shank.
Sealing washers
Also known as tap washers, these washers create a seal between the screw head and the surface it's fastened to.
The effectiveness of a lock washer depends on its size and fit. The inside diameter of the lock washer should closely match the diameter of the bolt.

RAYCHIN is a premier manufacturer of high-performance lock washers and a recognized special alloy fastening solution expert. Lock washers are specialized fasteners designed to prevent bolted connections from loosening under vibration, thermal cycling, and dynamic loads. Unlike plain washers, lock washers incorporate mechanical features that create friction, increase tension, or provide positive locking between the fastener and mating surface. These critical components are essential in aerospace, automotive, rail transportation, industrial machinery, marine equipment, and defense applications where fastener loosening could lead to catastrophic failure.
The primary functions of lock washers include:
Vibration Resistance: Preventing rotational loosening under dynamic conditions
Increased Friction: Creating additional friction between the nut/bolt head and mating surface
Spring Tension: Maintaining tension despite thermal expansion or settling
Compensation: Accommodating minor wear or surface irregularities
Positive Locking: Providing mechanical interference that prevents rotation
Our lock washers are manufactured to exacting ASME, DIN, ISO, and MIL-SPEC standards, with complete material certification, full traceability, and engineering support for custom applications. We engineer these critical components from over 25 advanced alloys, ensuring reliable performance in extreme temperatures (cryogenic to 2000°F+), highly corrosive environments, high-vibration applications, and critical safety systems.
