Nimonic Fasteners

Nimonic Studs

Nimonic fasteners are best known for their high temperature, low-creep attributes. They are comprised primarily of nickel and chromium – typically more than 50% nickel and 20% chromium – along with other additive such as titanium and aluminum. Due to their ability to withstand extreme temperatures and pressure, they are often used in aircraft parts and gas turbine exhaust applications as well as high temperature furnace applications.

Nimonic Studs – Comprehensive Product Range

Double-End Studs

Nimonic double-end studs feature threads on both ends with an unthreaded center section. Available in standard configurations including tap-end studs (shorter thread engagement for permanent installation) and flange-end studs (equal thread lengths for nut-and-nut applications). Manufactured to ASME B16.5, API 6A, and custom specifications. Diameters from M6 to M48 (1/4" to 2"). Essential for high-pressure flange connections in power generation and petrochemical processing where operating temperatures reach up to 800°C.

Tap-End Studs

Nimonic tap-end studs are designed for permanent installation in tapped holes, with one end having a shorter thread engagement for the tapped component and the other end for nut installation. Ideal for gas turbine casing flanges, pressure vessels, and valve assemblies where reliable clamping force must be maintained under extreme thermal cycling. Available with precision rolled threads for superior fatigue life in high-temperature cyclic applications.

Fully Threaded Studs

Nimonic fully threaded studs (continuous thread studs) are threaded along the entire length, providing maximum flexibility for cut-to-length applications. Available in standard lengths of 1m, 2m, 3m, and custom lengths up to 6m. Precision rolled threads for uniform strength and thread engagement. Used in heat exchanger assemblies, furnace components, and custom fixturing applications requiring high-temperature strength up to 920°C.

Weld Studs

Nimonic weld studs are designed for arc welding or resistance welding to metal surfaces, providing permanent attachment points in high-temperature assemblies. Available in various configurations including threaded, unthreaded, and internally threaded types. Used in furnace linings, heat shield attachments, and turbine casing insulation retention systems. Custom designs available for specialized welding requirements.

Exceptional Corrosion Resistance of Nimonic Studs

Nimonic alloys offer outstanding corrosion resistance in high-temperature oxidizing environments, making them suitable for the most demanding applications in gas turbines, aerospace, and industrial processing. The chromium content (18-21%) provides excellent oxidation resistance by forming a protective Cr₂O₃ layer at elevated temperatures. Cobalt additions in Nimonic 90 enhance hot corrosion resistance and stability during long-term operation at high temperatures. All three alloys exhibit good resistance to scaling and oxidation under continuous exposure.

  • Oxidation Resistance: Outstanding resistance to scaling and oxidation up to 1050°C under continuous exposure. Performs well in combustion environments and under frequent thermal cycling conditions. Forms protective oxides (Cr₂O₃, Al₂O₃, TiO₂) that provide excellent high-temperature corrosion resistance. Nimonic 75 is specifically designed for sheet metal fabrications requiring oxidation and scaling resistance together with medium strength at high operating temperatures.
  • Hot Corrosion: Good resistance to hot corrosion in combustion environments. Nimonic 90 is designed to operate in hot gas zones where long-term thermal stability is required, with high resistance to hot oxidation allowing use in engine applications. Nimonic 80A has good corrosion and oxidation resistance and high tensile and creep-rupture properties at temperatures to 815°C.
  • Sulfidation Resistance: Nimonic alloys perform well in sulfur-containing environments, with Nimonic 90 meeting NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156-3 requirements for sour service in oil and gas applications.
  • Salt Spray Environments: Performs well in salt spray environments found in marine gas turbine service and naval applications.
  • Solution Treated Condition: Solution treated material offers good corrosion resistance and fabricability.
  • Bimetallic Corrosion: Can be safely connected to other nickel-based superalloys, stainless steels, and titanium alloys with appropriate precautions. Silver-plated threads (AMS 2410) reduce galvanic corrosion risk.
