Metallurgical note: MP159 is a multiphase cobalt-nickel-chromium alloy strengthened through a combination of cold work and age hardening. The alloy develops its ultra-high strength through cold deformation (typically 48% reduction) which induces a strain-induced martensitic transformation (γ → ε), followed by aging at 650-675°C to precipitate fine Ni₃(Al, Ti) L1₂ particles. This unique strengthening mechanism enables tensile strengths exceeding 1830 MPa (265 ksi) while maintaining good ductility and toughness. The alloy remains non-magnetic (permeability <1.00265) even after cold working.
