PH 13-8 Mo offers better mechanical properties in demanding environmental conditions in comparison to other materials based on iron. Precise control of the microstructure is achieved through vacuum melting and remelting. Medium to high strength can be achieved through precipitation hardening aging treatments.

Precipitation Hardening

PH 13-8 Mo fasteners derive their strength from aging heat treatment. After solution annealing (Condition A), fasteners are aged at 950°F to 1150°F (510°C to 620°C) to precipitate fine intermetallic compounds (NiAl) within the martensitic matrix. This yields ultimate tensile strengths from 170 ksi to 220 ksi with excellent ductility and fracture toughness.
